It is surely not that easy to define or describe the cultural pattern of Istanbul, a city carrying the traces of civilisations both clashing and resembling each other… It would be easier perhaps if there were well-defined and absolute descriptions of the West and East. We would then remark that the city is at a finely intersecting point between these so-called “two” geographies and cultures. But it is not!
Despite the popularity of this above-mentioned reductionist approach, the history reveals that the case of Istanbul is more than that. Being the home of different nations and civilisations for over decades, it has always been the home of the minorities, which is what inherently attributes to the city a cultural mosaic rarely witnessed to this very extent.
We hope to provide our clients with at least a rough notion of the cultural pattern prevailing in the city, the kinds of instances that can lead to cultural and communicative problems as well as some tips to overcome such unintended cases. The workshops are offered by Istanbul Expat Center team members who are scholars in the field of (Inter)Cultural Studies and related fields.
